Wholesome, clean, nutritious, and delicious.
When it comes to making the perfect smoothie, I've seen many charts, books, and videos on the matrix of ingredients one could include and the very best combinations to try.
This is craziness.
Making a smoothie is not rocket science.
It's fun. It's experimental, and there are very rare instances that your combinations will not work.
So I'm going to tell you what I personally have been doing for my morning smoothies.
First off, I'm a meal prep person and I'm not rich enough to go out and buy a million freezer proof Mason jars to save the environment, so I like to use quart sized freezer bags to store and freeze my smoothies. I take them to work and dump them in a proper cup with a metal straw when they have thawed enough. Also, because I'm a meal prep person, at least for lunches, I like to make a batch of smoothies for 1-2 weeks at a time. It's so much easier that way than making one every morning when you're miserable and just want to go back to sleep.
Alright. So what do I put in my smoothies??
Yogurt is key.
Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt is a godsend.
But any old yogurt is also amazing. Honestly the sweetened and flavored ones are really good in smoothies, I just try and steer away from high fat, added unnatural sugar products when it comes to health drinks. But heck, I've made smoothies with ice cream before. You do you.
Milk is also key.
Just a splash if you like thicker smoothies, maybe a quarter cup if you like them thinner. I enjoy using coconut milk, because it has lower calories, and tastes really good with a tropical blend of fruit. But again, you can really use any milk you enjoy.
Even chocolate milk. (Can you imagine a smoothie more delicious than a greek vanilla yogurt, dark chocolate chip, banana, natural peanut butter, cocoa powder, chocolate milk smoothie??? 😍)
As for the fruit.
I'm not super picky, so I like to cut up and freeze 4 types of fruits or so at once and just randomly add them to my smoothies so each one is uniquely flavored.
My usual fruits are:
Bananas
Pineapple
Mango
Peaches
Blueberries
Strawberries
Kiwi
A touch of fiber and extra nutritional value.
Add spinach to your smoothie.
Do it.
You literally won't even taste it.
Be brave like your momma told you to be.
Eat your greens.
Along these lines, if your budget allows you to buy more than one avocado per week, by all means throw half of one of those bad boys in a smoothie. You get your good fat and a protein boost! And it makes smoothies smooth as they should be.
I normally add a couple scoops of chia seeds.
Sometimes spirulina power.
And in the past I've added flax seed powder...but I've found that if you don't drink the smoothie right away, the powder can form an odd flavor. I'm not a big fan, but if I'm having a fresh smoothie, I'll add some.
And there you have it folks! Healthy smoothies that taste actually super delicious!
Enjoy!
