On Any Given Day

A brief look at my daily life as a filmmakers wife, an almost employed Library Assistant, and the actual Emma Tierson.

Emma Tierson, Writing, notepad, plant, basil, computer, phone

I'm not going to lie to you, a lot of my life involves looking at a screen. I wake up, look at my phone to check the time, its late, of course I wake up late again. My new job doesn't start for another week which gives me the freedom to sleep in and stay up late. I don't recommend it. Especially if you have things to do. My "To Do" list almost never gets finished.

After brushing my teeth with charcoal tooth powder-because I'm into that semi-natural life-I brew some coffee to stain my fresh and perfect teeth. Coffee is necessary for survival. Some people refuse to drink it because it is addictive or because they read that people have too much caffeine nowadays. I am certainly not one of those people. In fact, I will probably try and peer pressure you into drinking coffee with me if you come over to my house before noon. My coffee habit started a long time ago, probably when I was just six or seven* years old. I'm never giving it up. I'll spend maybe an hour or so enjoying my drink while scrolling through so really useless articles on my phone. Gotta love Buzzfeed in the morning. They really know where the crazy is at.

*if even one person comments about how drinking coffee so young can stunt a persons growth so help me I will.....grrrr! I have heard it all folks. GUESS WHAT?! Ya girl is still short!

Eventually, I slowly figure out it's time for me to get a move on and start my day, so I make my "To Do" list. This list is very important to me. In fact, I kinda just love lists in general. My 'Notes' app on my phone is only check lists. But, the daily "To Do" list is an important ritual. It's how many things I need to do on any given day, and trying to limit the list as much as possible so I can actually get some stuff done. My list always has a mix of daily chores, something that either involves my job, getting a job, school, or the paperwork for the government (I just moved, there's still a lot of things I'm behind on), grocery shopping, and making time for whatever hobby I put an urgent label on for that day. To make sure that I do get something crossed off my list I always start with a household chore or two....and then immediately go and bother my husband, Cody, because I love to talk.

Cody is someone who can stay in one room and work on the same project for 15 hours or more. I really wish that I could have a work ethic like that, but I'm more of a work on a project for half an hour, hand wash the laundry-which by the way is SUPER exhausting, take a break to chat with Cody or text a friend, get going on a third project, eat some food, and then get back to that first thing to wrap it up kind of gal. Let's just say this always leaves me something to do so that I won't get bored the next day. It's totally still a productive way to get stuff done. Right?

So. By this time it's getting to be evening and I realize I am hungry with no dinner plan. If you don't know me well, then one thing that you should know about me is that I LOVE FOOD. If I make you dinner, it's not just going to be mac 'n' cheese, it's going to be mac 'n' cheese by Emma. It's different. I'm 100% extra about my cooking. I keep no fewer than four herb plants in my greenhouse year round. I bake my bread from scratch weekly. If I'm not making it homemade, then I always add at least one other type of cheese to my box mac 'n' cheese and it definitely has half and half instead of milk. If I make pizza, it's not going to be just cheese and pepperoni, I've got that buffalo chicken and white pizza along with the others. If you're really lucky, I'll make you homemade gnocchi. Every meal I save my veggie scraps in a freezer bag. When the bag is full I turn it into stock along and add a carcass from a rotisserie chicken to the pot. You come over for a holiday meal? I'll probably make maple bacon butter to go on the crescent rolls. As you can see, I'm crazy when it comes to food. So when I get hungry and realize I have absolutely no dinner plans I get a bit freaked out, and frantically check my fridge and pantry.

Once I have a good idea of what I'm going to eat, I enter my favorite part of the day. Just me, cooking, in the kitchen. Making a complete mess of the entire place. Guaranteed to stain my clothes with olive oil at one point or another. That doesn't matter though, I'm in my element. #ovenpuns

I finally have a break from all of my thoughts. I'm not thinking about how all my friends are far away and can't help me explore this new environment, or how I keep interrupting Cody and how selfish that makes me feel, or how sometimes I just feel sad and I don't know why, or how unmotivated I've been feeling lately and how that makes me feel like I'm not pulling my weight in the chores category. No. This is a place where I can be who I am and who I want to be. It's a place where I can be proud of my work because I know it's actually good.

That's one of the reasons dinner is such an important meal for me. I helps me to take in how my day actually went and allows me to separate work from play. I get to have a meal with my favorite person, talk with him, and watch some of our favorite television shows and movies to relax. Beside making my food, this is definitely another favorite daily moment.

So there you have it. A snapshot of my daily life. It certainly doesn't include everything about my life or who I am, but it is a very truthful look at my life.
